Running With The Night

This week is so HUGE in my blogger family! With my Gothamist Interviews this week and my cousin-in-law, Chris Rabb from the Afro-Netizen blogging about the Democratic Convention in Boston, we've got the politics and entertainment thing covered. Anyway here is an excerpt of his latest post.
[Attention readers: These blog entries may contain high doses of sarcasm. Please read with caution.]

I'll be hoofin' it to the Fleet Center shortly to join the 15,000 credentialed journalists who are covering this suspenseful political extravaganza (he says sardonically)!
After all, other than knowing the nominee-to-be, his running-mate, and the Democratic Party's official 2004 platform, we don't know anything! For instance, where is the Utah delegation going to be situated? And who will be holding the tazer-gun when presidential footnote Al Gore takes the podium?

[As you can see, sarcasm runs in the family] To read more, check it out HERE.

What's Going ON?

Yay! My first Gothamist Interview is up. Jessy Delfino kindly agreed to be interviewed before she gets all Courtney Love on us! If you have comments, bring 'em here!

By the way, Jessy is one of the VERY funny women who are performing next Tuesday August 3rd at the Chicks and Giggles show!

Ultragrrrl is gonna get me fired from my day  job by posting a link to Tetris.  I was playing on my lunch break.

Why Can't I Be You?

Lollapalooza is dead. Enough said. Long live The Cure ! They are
headlining the Curiosa Tour, and will be in New York
in late July. Yay!

Just Like Heaven
Champagne in a can...Have you tasted it yet? Well,
this week I was blessed to have sampled the
sparkling Sofia. This
bubbly comes from Francis Coppola vineyards, and I
bet the kiddies in the Hamptons are loving it. Now I
can't wait for Marc Jacobs to create a signature
orange juice so that I can drink designer mimosas for
Sunday brunch!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep
Last Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dylan
Moran's Monster at the Village Theatre (158 Bleecker
St.) for free. However, I really wanted to get some
sleep, but my new motto is "you can sleep when you
die". So I attended and laughed heartily at the
irreverent comedy of Irishman Dylan Moran. It was
fun, and I even saw Jerry Orbach from "Law and
Order" in the audience! The
show was being taped for BBC America, so you may
see me in the audience when it airs this fall. By the
way, I heard that "Monster" has been extended, so
make sure you check out for "sh!ts and giggles"!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Boys Don't CryA week after Gay Pride, and I am thinking where are
the manly straight men? I'm guessing that they
are all at a bar somewhere talking about women and
relationships while downing shots of tequila. These
guys should probably check out one of my favorite
New York bar guides, Murph Guide
everyday to see what places have the best
happy hour. Cheers!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just Say Yes
Say yes as I call upon all you Nichelle Newsletter fans
to come out on Tuesday, July 6 for the 3rd
monthly "Chicks and Giggles" show! The stellar lineup
includes Carolyn Castiglia, Laura Mannino, Lena
Martinez, Amy Mahfouz, Veronica Mosey, Abby
Rosin, Jenny Rubin, and Jill Twiss. The cover is only
$8 with a two-drink minimum. The door is at 8PM,
and the show starts at 8:30 PM at the Laugh Lounge and call 212.614.2500 for reservations.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Disintegration

What in the heck was I thinking last week?! I
actually posted a personal ad in Craig's List
after writing the newsletter. (Dumb move!) I was quickly
overwhelmed with a deluge of emails from creepy
guys who claimed to be lawyers. I took the post
down after less than a day. I soon realized that
this single thing is better left
unsaid. Anyway, if you ever want to be entertained by CL, then check out
Amy Blair's "The Week in Craig" column on Black Table .

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hot Hot Hot!
There are some folks that are being much buzzed
about lately and I just to bear witness to their
brilliance. First up is Demetri
Martin, comedian. I first saw his act at
Moonwork back last winter, and he's very funny
and pretty cute. His show is called Spiral Bound. Also I gotta say that I really
enjoyed listening to Mike Sandwich , a wild and crazy band from Astoria, Queens who played last weekend at Coney Island.
If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free
Be Still My Beating Heart
Last Saturday, I discovered a few things. First, my friend told me that I can quickly get to Astoria from Harlem by taking the M60 bus. Then I heard this really cool band named Sawyer from Boston play at the Bohemian Beer Garden. Those kids rocked! Finally, I found the new malt beverage of my dreams, Smirnoff Twisted Green Apple. It's way better and cheaper than an apple martini!
Russians
My friends and I fell in love with the fruit-infused vodka and the charming bartender at Russian Samovar, a Russian Vodka bar and restaurant (256 West 52nd Street). I really enjoyed the Old World charm of this Midtown haunt. We sampled exotic flavors such as plum, peach, lemon and even coriander and cleansed our palates with delicious appetizers. It's a fun place for a date, too and you can have the piano guy play your favorite tune!
Send Your Love
It's Extremely Gay week here in the In-Why-See. (Love that Ted Casablancas!) By the end of the week, I will have attended a gay blogger reading, gone to the Mermaid Parade and maybe watch the Gay Pride Parade on Sunday. But the gayest thing EVER is to be married to Liza Minelli!
An Englishman in New York
From the Anglophile files... One of my favorite bloggers is Guy Brighton's New York Guide. He has a listing of all the places to watch the Euro 2004. Plus, he's reviewed many cool bars and restaurants in NYC.
If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free
OK, so I am single, single and single. I get so many emails about summer shares and sublets that I got an idea. Instead of posting an ad about wanting a summer share, I want to post an ad for sharing the summer. Hopefully, this will help me find my one true desire, a summer boyfriend. I just want "some dude" from June 23 to Labor Day. If anyone knows any seasonal boyfriend candidates, then let me know. Thanks!
I'm Free
I spent a long weekend in Philadelphia. It was good to clear my mind and be away from work, the blog, the comedy, the city, etc. It was lovely to spend time with my cousin and reminisce about when were kids. I slept well and ate swell. I feel refreshed!
Last week I forgot to release myself of a burden, and it just dawned on me today that I must let go of the quasi-friendship that I have with my ex-boyfriend. I often speak of him when I don’t plan to. We email each other and talk on the phone frequently, but it’s a waste of my time. He will never be what I want, and I cannot settle for what he stingily offers me sometimes-- and that is only when he’s in good mood. I said “goodbye”, and as I saw the words on the screen, it felt so right. I wish him well, truly I do. He needs a lot of work, but he’s a good guy. Whew! Where’s the nearest bar? I have a taste for a frozen margarita!
Who Do You Love?
Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To prove that the ladies love a cheap drink now and again, I stopped by
Chango, a posh-looking Mexican bar on Park Ave South where they serve $5
frozen margaritas from 4-7PM for Happy Hour. I was very happy to taste a
yummy passionfruit margarita. New Jersey, you are on the wrong side of
history!
What's Going On?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Who is John Wilkes Booth? What is Spanish fly? What is 1945? Ok, I know
you wondering what's going on, so here's the deal. On Friday afternoon,
I am trying out for Jeopardy, which is way much cooler than trying to
get cast for the next Hilton reality show! I have to pass a test and
then participate in a mock round of game. Wish me luck!

Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two months ago, I happened upon a little Australian bar/restaurant on
Avenue C named the Sunburnt Cow (137 Avenue C). It was too late in the
evening to sample one of their "Mad Cow" pies that are highly
recommended. However I got a chance recently to have one of the pies,
which was delicious with a flaky crust. Plus, they have a garden
outback! Pun not intended.
Who's That Girl? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's June, and it hot! So now is the time start searching for the
perfect pasties and wig to get your costume ready for the Coney Island
Mermaid Parade on Saturday, June 26. I was just looking at blue wigs the
other day or may go with a blonde one. Anyway, the 2004 Mermaid may some
hipster street cred, as Moby will be King Neptune. I am gathering a
posse together to have fun and march in the parade. If interested, email
a sista'. http://www.coneyislandusa.com
Who Can It Be Now? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will be away this weekend at my summer share in the Hamptons. Did I
just write that with a straight face?! No, I will be in Philly rocking
it in a rocking chair and singing sweet songs to my baby cousin,
Freeman. But if I were in the city this weekend, I would check out the
documentary at Film Forum about Imelda Marcos. You gotta love a woman
with so many shoes. (SJP's has nothing on her!) Saturday night, I would
go to Schoolhouse Roxx show at P.S. 122 with Corn Mo, Jessy Delphino and
Jason Trachtenburg.
Take Me With You
littleprince
Announcement: I am only doing a few links today because I’m lazy…
The Morning Papers
I honestly read the NY Post everyday on my way to work mainly for the Page Six gossip and the Pulse section. I read the NY Times and the Observer (the other pink paper) online, and I think the Daily News has no reason to exist.
Starfish and Coffee
Last Friday, I attended the Loser’s Lounge tribute to Prince, and I had a blast! The house band and all the guest singers were great. I totally enjoyed the show, and I noticed that Amy Poehler from SNL was really rocking out to “Lady Cab Driver”! You can still check out the show this weekend at the Fez Café. I am tempted to see it again. It was that GOOD!! Also Prince will be coming next month, but I heard the tickets are already sold out.
Sign O’ The Times
The New Jersey State Division of Civil Rights have banned bars from having “Ladies Night” drink specials. It’s a stupid ruling, in my opinion. Now I have no incentive whatsoever to venture into Jersey. They don’t treat chicks with respect and ply them with liquor like they do over here in the Big Apple!
Scandalous
I've having a semi-private party on Wednesday June 9 at Lava Gina (116 Ave C). Details will be sent in a special email. Stay tuned.
Let’s Go Crazy
Tuesday’s Chicks and Giggles show was fantastic, and many of you missed it. No worries! The next show is Tuesday, July 6 at the Laugh Lounge. It’s your chance to see the funniest females in comedy before they become rich and famous and you see them in Page Six. Check out the special blog which has a calendar that list dates for upcoming shows where you can find these talented ladies.
Cream
berry
Blueberry Hill
I find my thrill, checking out those fine officers in town for Fleet Week. I salute you! The parade of ships commences Wednesday, May 26 and there are public ship tours everyday through Memorial Day. Three years ago, I met a young sailor and got a tour of a ship, and I learned an important lesson. Don’t wear flip-flops when touring a naval ship; it could be potentially embarrassing!
Raspberry Beret
The Loser’s Lounge is doing a tribute at the Fez Café to one of my favorite artists, Prince. They will sing Prince hits not the “symbol” tunes. I am super excited! I think I will be there this weekend waving my hands while singing along to “Purple Rain” and asking where’s my lighter, dude? I am so there!
Strawberry Letter 23
Emails are nice because they are fast and easy. Since it’s summer why not slow down and take a minute to write a letter to a long-distance friend or family member. You could use loose-leaf paper, but it’s nice to have special stationery like the stuff I found at Iomoi. They have a pretty selection of designs for note cards and invitations. Plus, they even have cute e-stationery for those special occasions like a quick thank-you to a friend for that tip on the Fire Island share!
Strawberry Fields Forever
On any given day, you can lounge on the lawn and people watch at Central Park, but that’s so boring. (Yawn!) There are so many lovely green spaces all over the city. There’s Hudson River, Riverside, Prospect and Fort Tryon Park, to name a few. Find out what’s happening this summer at http://www.nycgovparks.org/.
Cherry Pie
The funniest chicks in NYC are coming to the Laugh Lounge this Tuesday, June 1 at 8PM for my Chicks and Giggles show. It’s going to be a hilarious with the talented Michelle Maclay of Comedy Social as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Comediennes that are performing include Ana Carolina, Gayle Crispin, Jessy Delfino, Maux Kelly, Ellen Lloyd, Laura Mannino, Fiona Walsh and extra special guest who you may have seen on TV! Call the Laugh Lounge (151 Essex St) today for reservations.
Ladies Night
I snook in and got the last contested spot for the “Ladies First” produced by WYSIWYG Talent Show on Tuesday May 18 at P.S. 122. It’s a reading of female bloggers and I am a big supporter of female productions, hence my Chicks and Giggles show. I had never heard of WYSIWYG before, but I got a flyer when I was at the Blogger Event at the Apple Store last week. So I have been working on my piece for the past week, and it has been so much fun/torture. I will probably revise it at least ten times before it’s done so here’s a spicy excerpt.
[I sensed that an orgasm was on the horizon, so I went through my to-do list in my head, titled “How to Come”. If I follow the list to the letter, two wonderful things happen, I am rendered totally relaxed and satisfied and hopefully you won’t ask me the stupidest even uttered out of a man’s mouth post-coital, “Did you come?”]
The One I Love
STIFFEDWEBFLIER
One Way Or Another
According to Finn, “It’s good to have choices”. So Thursday is a good night to test that theory. This Thursday, May 13, Philadelphia’s funky and fabulous punk band, Stiffed, will be playing at Sin-e (148-150 Attorney St.) at 8PM. And my favorites, The Lascivious Biddies will be playing at Pianos on Ludlow St.
No One In The World
The craziness of the war in Iraq, the prisoner abuse and the atrocities of terrorism are stark examples that the world right now has some major issues. The world needs a big hug, and what better place to find it is at Washington Square Park where there’s a guy hugging strangers just for the hell of it!
One World
Lava Gina, a luscious world music lounge, is having a fabulous concert on Saturday May 15 with recording artists Nefertite Jones and Ellis Hooks! Soul sensation Ellis Hooks has just released his latest album, “Uncomplicated”. 116 Avenue C between 7th and 8th Streets.
One Love
Spend Sunday evening in SoHo! My lovely friend Signe Grant is hosting a party this Sunday, May 16, at 203 Spring St from 7-11PM. The party is a fundraiser for an upcoming theatre project (an adaptation of Mallarme’s “A Throw Of The Dice”). The price is $20 and there’s a premium open bar featuring Absolut Vodka. 42 Below Vodka and Eagle Run Bourbon. Plus there will be a D.J. and raffle prizes. Yay! 203 Spring St is a very cool and comfy bar and lounge located at the corner of Spring and Sullivan Streets.
One More Chance
Dear Friends,
Do I have to threaten to move to Paris for you to come out on a weeknight?! I didn’t see many familiar faces at last night’s “Chicks and Giggles” which was the first comedy show I ever produced. I’m not trying to make you feel guilty, but this was a HUGE night for me, and I would have loved seeing your shiny, happy faces at the Laugh Lounge! The upside is that the event was a smashing success, and I’m doing it again Tuesday, June 1! Mark your calendars and put it in your Blackberry because it’s gonna be a great show. Be there! Call 212.614.2500 for reservations. Thanks a million!
I Want Your Sex
joys
Last week, I went to a totally fun show, an off-Broadway musical comedy called “The Joys of Sex”. It’s cute, fun and a little risqué! My friend Melissa Levis wrote the lyrics and book, and I can honestly say I would see it again. Critics may call it “Sex and the City” set to music, but I just think it’s a great show and at 90 minutes, you can bring your A.D.D.-challenged friends and they will enjoy it too! The "Joys of Sex" is in previews now at the Variety Arts Theatre (110 Third Avenue) and will open May 12.
Love Train
bhm_cover
CC Railroad, an urban folk band, is having a CD Release party to celebrate the release of their latest CD, "Black Horse Motel" on Tuesday, May 11 at the venerable Bitter End 147 Bleecker Street
(between Thompson and LaGuardia). The music starts at 8:30 PM. Cover is $5.
Come party with Carolann, Cheryl, Ryder and Rich!
Check out their website: CC Railroad.
What's the Frequency, Kenneth?
What’s Love Got to Do With It?
Don’t just send your lovely mother flowers for Mother’s Day! Do it right and take your MOM to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden this weekend. Enjoy the lovely cherry blossoms and lilacs in bloom. Admission is only $5. She’ll love you for it!
Oh What A World
It’s ALIVE! The movie “Godzilla” is playing at the Film Forum (209 West Houston) starting Friday May 7 for only two weeks. It’s the original uncut Japanese version, so go see this classic flick. This is the kind of movie that popcorn was made for!
So What You Want
Two of my favorite things, sweets and books come together this Saturday at Dylan Candy Bar at 2:00PM. There will be a book signing of “Candy Freak”, the new book by author Steve Almond. “Candyfreak” chronicles the author’s lifelong quest for the perfect chocolate candy. If this book is as good as Almond’s last book, “My Life in Heavy Metal”, then readers are definitely in for a treat
What I Got
I have got a great lineup of funny girls who will be performing comedy on Tuesday, May 11 at the Laugh Lounge 151 Essex St). The “Chicks and Giggles” show will feature Ellen Lloyd, Carolyn Castiglia, Jeannie Dean, Liz Maher, Abby Rosin, Jenny Rubin , Tasha Space and Jill Twiss. Get there at 8PM, cover is $8 with 2-drink minimum. Come on down and laugh!
What’s The 411?
Reading blogs are a surefire way to reduce your productivity at work by 40%. Who wants to work that hard anyway?! To find out the latest posts from your favorite blogs including mine, instead of surfing all over the net, you can simply subscribe to Kinja where you can find them all in one spot. It’s like one-stop shopping for the blog readers. You can read what I like to read by checking my digest. Now that's what I call efficient.
Everybody Wants To Rule The World
Last night, I was among the superstars of blogging at the NY Blogger Event at the Apple Store (103 Prince St). There was an interesting and informative panel discussion that featured Nick Denton, Jason Calacanis, Choire Sicha, Lockhart Steele, Jen Chung and blog-famous others. When I looked around the crowd and noticed how intensely the audience was paying attention to the speakers, I realized that I am a geek like the rest of them! Afterward, the crowd converged at Merc Bar and I tossed back a few beers with the creator of Dodgeball, a new service which is like Friendster meets Vindigo on a mobile phone. He told about this fun game that he played last weekend, Pac-Manhattan. I had a blast! However, all this name dropping is giving me a headache, so I gotta get to back to WORK. For more on the event, check out
Standard Deviance.
You're My First, My Last, My Everything
Well, it was actually my wurst! I tasted my first sausage of the season (no jokes please!) as me and a gang of friends went down to the Lower East Side on Saturday to check out the May Day festival at Loreley, a new German bar and biergarten on Rivington. I tried a curry wurst, which was kinda interesting, but what I really loved are the french fries and the beer! The selection of German beer is great, and each beer on tap has a matching glass which is good. It's kinda like Garanimals for beer, so your drinking buddy won't confuse your Spaten, with his Hefewiezen. Gesundheit!
Can't Get There From Here
Get Here
Forget Magnolia Bakery! The search for the perfect cupcake ends here at Make My Cake (103 Central Park North at 110th St). They bake very yummy cupcakes with creamy icings, including my new favorite, a red velvet cupcake. Since it’s located at the north end of Central Park, you can easily run or walk off the calories from eating a cupcake. Believe me, it’s worth the caloric expenditure!
Here and Now
Artist Carol Markel has an amazing collection of her colorful and whimsical collages and hats on display at Galerie Chacur on 72 Orchard St in the Lower East Side. Her collages of party dresses are inspired by fun and fashion with her use of vintage clothing labels, with fabric, felt and lace. She puts the fun in art and fashion. The exhibit is showing now through May 5. (If anyone interested in buying me a very early birthday gift, a piece of art from Carol Markel’s Paint-Box Girls collection would suit me fine!)
Here Comes The Sun
Imagine this! I am in movie theatre in Manhattan and the audience is cheering and laughing. It’s a foreign film with subtitles, no less. What is it? It’s “Shaolin Soccer”, a Hong Kong action comedy about Kung-Fu and Soccer. Check out this feel good movie! It’s playing now at Landmark Sunshine Cinema at 143 East Houston St.
Hot in Herre
The weather may be confused as to what season it is, but according to MY calendar, it’s time to enjoy ice cream! So I visited the famous, il Laboratorio del Gelato (95 Orchard St). They have a wide range of flavors for their sinful ice creams and heavenly sorbets. I sampled the maple walnut and crème fraiche flavors. It was divine! Note: The store closes early, so stop by on an afternoon on the weekends.
Here She Comes Now
I am so excited about this new event, Chicks and Giggles! It’s an all-girl comedy night that I am producing at the Laugh Lounge (151 Essex St). I have found the funniest girls in the city, and they will perform Tuesday, May 11 at 8:00PM. Some of the comediennes you will see include Ellen Lloyd, Carolyn Castiglia, Abby Rosin, Jenny Rubin and Tasha Space. You are invited to laugh!
Orange Crush
Red, Red Wine
Come join me Thursday April 22 as I will be selling raffle tickets and working the room for the Community Service Society’s Annual Fundraiser at Eugene. There’s a two-hour open bar and appetizers. I just picked up a copy of the list of the raffle prizes which includes a trip for two to the Caribbean, restaurant and spa certificates and Watson Adventures passes. If you don’t win, console yourself in knowing that you gave to a good cause, and you got tipsy doing it. Did I mention the two-hour open bar from 6:30-8:30PM?! Tickets are $40 in advance ($50 door) and can be purchased at the CSSNY site.
Blue Moon
Robert Whaley, flirty lead singer and fabulous coronet player of the Niagaras, dances frenetically on stage as if he were possessed by the devil! The Niagaras are the ultimate party band. You'll wanna dance until the cows come home! They're playing at the Cutting Room (19 West 24th Street between 6th and Broadway)on Saturday April 24th at midnight.
It Ain’t Easy Being Green
Last Saturday, my friend and I happened upon Café 111 in Brooklyn Heights for dinner, at my urging because I wanted to check out the live music there. To my surprise, we enjoyed a delightful set by the excellent and eccentric Ethan Lipton. First, he did a few short songs a cappella, and I didn’t know if he was joking. Then the rest of the trio came up and they were great! To describe the music, it can be best described as eclectic and effervescent. Ethan’s is playing at the Liberty Heights Tap Room (34 Van Dyke St./Brooklyn) on Saturday at 10PM. It is definitely worth the trip to Red Hook with my good friend and vocal acrobat Zero Boy is also performing.
Purple Rain
When in Brooklyn, drink like the Romans! Go to Quench Bar on 282 Smith Street at Sackett St in Carroll Gardens. Potent and inspired potables like Raspberry mojitos will definitely quench your thirst. I stopped last weekend with a friend and loved the bar instantly. You can easily fall off the bar stool while singing along to 80s hits on the great jukebox from bands like The Fixx and ABC. It’s the look of love, baby!
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Help Me Find A Boyfriend! I have decided to take my search off-line. I know some of you were enjoying this section each week, but I think it is best to conduct my search undercover or under the covers as the case may be. Hey, I will continue to write something FUNNY, even it’s about love, work or Bush. Even I can get “Kerryed” away by all the craziness!
Superwoman
Man, I Feel Like A Woman
Attention Ladies! With Victoria’s Secret ditching their televised fashion show and all the hoopla over Ms. Jackson, I’m starting to think that the female form is not being sufficiently appreciated. So, I want to remind/inform all you pretty things some of the best places to buy lingerie. In SoHo, there’s Agent Provocateur at 133 Mercer St. and Le Corset by Selima on 80 Thompson St. Plus, if you are ever near NYU checking out the handsome young boys, stop by La Petite Coquette (51 University Place. (P.S.: Guys! Shopping with your lady for lingerie can be a rewarding adventure.)
Magic Man
Instead of the textbook “performance art for dummies”, Neal Medlyn succeeds in screwing with your mind while seducing your funny bone! Catch Neal Medlyn's Manfinger at Collective Unconscious, (145 Ludlow Street) this Friday April 16, at 8PM and again on May 7, 2004. The price is only $7.
It's Raining Men
Help Me Find A Boyfriend! I will reserve a section each week to let you know how it’s going. After reading last week’s newsletter, Hurry Date Co-Founder, Adele Testani offered me a free pass to attend a Hurry Date event last Wednesday at Fuelray (68 West 3rd Street). It was fun! If you have never been to a speed-dating event, it is like musical chairs for inebriated adults. So I was happy to meet 25 eligible bachelors in a single night. As far as a match goes, I kinda fancy a guy from the event who actually lives in my neighborhood. Go figure! If you think of anyone eligible, please email me at nichellenewsletter@yahoo.com.
Maneater
Are you ready to laugh? My very funny and talented friend Abby Rosin is performing comedy next Wednesday at 8:30PM the Laugh Lounge 151 Essex Street. The Laugh Lounge is a nice place to grab a beer and a laugh. You can get there by taking the F train to Delancey.
Tuesday, April 13, 2004
Up In This!
You can call me the "hype girl" for my buddy Don McCloskey! I would be his manager, but 20% of nothing is still...NOTHING. So please do me a solid and vote for him as he has been nominated for two Philly Music Awards (Best Male Entertainer and Best Acoustic Act) Yay! You can vote online once a day Phillyatnight.
Friday April 16, Don McCloskey will be playing at the Parkside Lounge at 8PM. Cover is $5. You can find the Parkside Lounge at 317 E. Houston Street between B&C. Take the F train to 2nd Avenue.
Take My Breath Away
The Brooklyn Museum will be FREE this Saturday, April 17 in celebration of its new facade. If you have never been, I strongly suggest that you check it out. The Brooklyn Museum has an awesome and impressive collection of art, and it is conveniently on the 2/3 at Eastern Parkway. I love the Brooklyn Museum, and I want more people to enjoy it! Today's New York Times has a good article about the museum's desire to increase attendance.
Automatic For The People
Village People
Nichelle has drifted to
Typepad. Please add to your favorites!!!
Happy Easter! Happy Passover! Happy Spring! I am so ready to pack up
my winter clothes. In fact, I may purge some stuff by donating to the
Salvation Army. However, I don’t recommend Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn.
It’s not for the faint of heart. They viciously judge your fashion
sense and only give you pennies for the old Gap shirt that you wore back
in the 90s.
Groovy People Three years ago, I attended a workshop of this musical written by a
friend, Melissa Levis. Two years ago, I saw it again at the Fringe
Festival, and finally, “The Joys of Sex” is now in previews at the
Variety Arts Theatre, 110 Third Ave at 13th Street. It’s hilarious and
sexy! If you are motivated by psychological pricing, then remember
this: tix are two for $69!
Beautiful People
Ok, I listen to Rufus Wainwright’s latest CD, Want One, when I am working. It’s both soothing and disturbing
at the same time. I especially like the opening track, “Oh What A World”
where Rufus sings “Men reading fashion magazines. Straight men". I
wonder if he was thinking about that new men’s shopping magazine, Cargo.
People Are People
I saw Boy Skout a few weeks ago in Brooklyn, and these girls kick ASS!
Their sound is like a female Joy Division, and they are playing at
Saturday, April 10 at Pianos (158 Ludlow St). Show starts at 10PM and
the tickets are $7! Some other band named Au Revoir Simone opens the
show. For information on more shows at Pianos, check out
http://www.pianosnyc.com/shows.html.
One World
Lately, I find myself saying "It's a small world" a lot because New York is a really a small city with many social circles. Now, whenever I meet someone new, there is usually some connection with a friend or a F.O.A.F. (friend of a friend)! So I was really curious when I picked up "The Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell. I found out that I am a bit of a "Connector". What does it mean? I think it means that I know a lot of people, so if I piss off a bunch of you then I may have to go into a witness protection program!
In related news...look out for The Roots new album dropping this spring, The Tipping Point Sessions.
Sexual Healing
Brooklyn Congressman Major Owens has written a play about Viagara. When I read about this "Viagara Monologues" on the cover of the Sunday New York Post, I was shocked! When I lived in his district a few years ago, I even went to a fundraiser for his campaign. Now I want my money back.
I have no intention of judging the 67 year old Congressman attempt at fame or artistic pursuits, but I really believe this type of theatrics is better left to people like Larry Flynt or Felix Dennis
Fake!
Last night, I watched this show on MTV,and it really scared me. It was a disturbing documentary/reality on these twins from Arizona who wanted plastic surgery, so they could resemble Brad Pitt. Mike and Matt are only 21, and outside of some bad acne and nonexistent cheekbones, they looked average. However, I don't think they could have pass a psych evaluation, because they seemed obsessed with Brad Pitt. One of them even remarked that Brad was "beautiful". I think it was irresponsible for MTV to put this on the air! MTV's target audience is full of young adults who are easily influenced by the celebrity culture. I wish the twins well in their pursuits, and I hope they realize that you can't get plastic surgery for self-esteem and an original personality.MTV.com - Onair - I Want A Famous Face - Meet The Patients
Who Stole The Show?
As counter-programming to the whole Manhattan St Paddy’s Day festivities, I went out with my friends in Brooklyn. First we grabbed dinner at Henry St. Ale House in Brooklyn Heights. They have a turkey sandwich with apple and brie that is just divine. Then we caught a cab to Southpaw to see BoySkout and Brassy. The bands started late, so we had time to kill, and my friends suggested that we stop by Café Ma on Bergen St. The lounge is cozy and cool, and they make delicious and exotic cocktails, like a Bubble Tea with vodka. After one round of drinks, we head back to Southpaw to enjoy a great show. BoySkout is a girl band with a Joy Division sound and I highly recommend getting Brassy’s latest CD, “Getting Wise” . It’s funky!
Brass In Pocket
Have you heard of Brassy? Do you live in a cave? Brassy is a quartet who play pop/hip-hop/punk! Lead singer Muffin Spenser and the gang are playing tonight at Southpaw. My friends and I are going and we plan to "Shamrock" and roll! I hear that tickets are $8, so you can enjoy a few beers and concert with change to spare!
Eat It!
Did you know that McDonald's delivers up in Harlem? I found out when a delivery girl erroneously ringed my buzzer of my apartment Saturday morning! Obviously, she had the wrong address, and I directed her to peddle that Egg McMuffin elsewhere. By the way, how lazy do you have to be to have McDonald's delivered to your home?! The closest one to my apartment is one block away, but you'd have to travel some distance to get a good grocer with fresh fruit and veggies. No wonder obesity is an epidemic here in the United States. France's Marie Antoinette was rumored to say, "Let them eat cake"; and we Americans "Would you like fries with that shake?" Funny, huh?
I am anxiously waiting to see the Sundance award-winning documentary, SuperSize Me, which will open May 7, 2004.
No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn
Brooklyn, have you heard the news about Halcyon? One of my favorite places to lounge and listen to music is closing in April. They promise to re-open in 2005 into a larger space, but my spot at 227 Smith Street is closing. I am little sad!
According to the email I received from the list-serv, the owners said, “we’re gonna blow the roof off this mutha before we let her go! For the final stretch we’ve lined up some amazing talent... Every night from here to April 1st is going to be something special so we hope you make an effort to roll through and share a last good time on Smith St. After officially closing, between April 2-17, we are throwing a series of blow-out weekend keg parties with all of our stuff cleared out of the space, just like we used to back in the day…”
Hey Good Looking, What You Got Cookin'?
I spent Friday at Natchez, which was supposed to be lovely dinner with my friends and their parents who were visiting from Manchester at a new Cajun place in the East Village. Well, after a laborious two-hour wait and having two rounds of watered-down vodka cocktails, we left. Then we stopped by one of old favorites, Supper. It is one of the best Italian restaurants in the city. The staff is superb, and the food and wine are divine! We even saw a member of the Strokes hangin' out with a petite blonde and some other friends.
Supper is located at 156 2nd Street between A&B. Even if there's a crowd, you can always enjoy a glass of Cupertino at the wine bar next door! The bartender is the best!
King For A Day
I am presenting a short commentary on today. Call me Andy Rooney! Some girls dance with women. Some politicians bowl for oranges! Some people love Wednesdays, and some dogs love to hump. Last night I saw Don King last night outside 1633 Broadway on my way from work. He's the "king" of promotion, and I could have picked up a few tips. Why?! Instead I walked right past him to get down to the subway station.
Time After Time
It’s the first day of March, and I feel fine! The weather is amazing, and I am not sleepy from drinking Merlot while watching the boring and epic-long Oscars. There was no need for a five-second delay. In fact, the awards would have been so much better if I have TiVo! Then I would have been able to fast forward through all the rambling acceptance speeches and tributes. Most of the ladies were lovely, so there was not enough fashion faux pas fodder to gossip about.
Anyway, I found this article today about bloggers or content creators. A lot of people still don’t know about us yet, and it’s a damn shame!
Angel
Last night my friend invited me to a free screening of “Iron Jawed Angels”, a HBO film. This screening was for the New York Women in Film and Television.
Now that I don’t have cable or even a TV, this was a treat to see! The film is about Alice Paul, a suffragist who fearlessly paved the way for the 19th amendment that granted women the right to vote.
Before the screening, there was a reception where I drank half a glass of red wine and planned to do some schmoozing with women in film. Ironically, the only person I chatted with was an older man who asked me what’s the best way to spread hummus on a pita without using fingers or cutlery. I suggested using another pita slice to do the spreading!
I'm Not In Love
"I'm not in love, so don't forget it. It's just a
silly phase I'm going through..." Do you remember that tune by 10cc?!
This week, there has been a glut of news and magazine articles about love, sex, relationships, etc. because of Valentine's Day. In my opinion, it's lazy and irresponsible to dump the love stuff on us in the shortest month of the year. Love happens every minute you breathe. I am hopping on my soapbox to say that's OK to not be in a relationship, but you don't have label yourself "quirkyalone" or drown your sorrows in chocolate or ice cream. Get out and notice love. Today, I heard a bird chirping and I smiled because I know that spring is coming soon!
The Spy Who Loved Me
File this one under shameless self-promotion. I got published in the Agent Provocateur newsletter! I adore Agent Provocateur's naughty British lingerie and accessories. So I submitted a letter of praise.
Letter from America
"I love Agent Provocateur's store in Soho. I had a lovely and exciting experience the moment I walked in. I love the rich decor of the store. The sales attendants are very sexy and attentive. I tried on one of the naughty nipple-out bras and matching panties. I looked so damn hot! It was a great thing for me as a woman because trying on clothes in a store has always been a chore for me. I fluctuate between a size 10 or size 12 and I have D-cup boobs; many of the NYC couture fashions don't fit me properly. I want to thank you guys for being so wonderfully sexy and bringing a fun place to shop or browse to NYC.
My AP fantasy would be to bring my boyfriend there for a little fashion show. He could sit in a chair, as I come out of the dressing room with different lingerie (thongs, chemise, teddy, panties, bras, etc) and donning the required accessories (collars, whip and those pink mules) He'd get so excited that he wants to undress me, and we have a little fling in the dressing room. Plus, he'd buy me thousands of dollars of Agent Provocateur lingerie. (I love the sparkly pink lotion, too!)"
OK, this is a lame attempt at getting in on the Bennifer bandwagon as it rides into the sunset! Those of you who mourn the breakup can comfort yourselves with the following combinations.
Well, you can get your fix from Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley from "The House of Sand and Fog". If you want comedy there's Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller from "Along Came Polly". Then for music, make a special CD with songs like "Benny & the Jets" and 867-5309 (Jenny is in the song).
Reunited
TV
The more I watch; the more I like it! Kudos to VH1 for its latest project, "Bands Reunited". Where "I Love the 80's" was cloying nostalgia, this is so much better. The formula for this show is reality+reunion+retro 80s band concert. It ROCKS!!!
    Stay
    TV
    Hey, I stayed in on a wintry Friday night to look at a new show premiering on the Food Network, Dweezil and Lisa.
  • Food TV
  • It's the zany adventures of Dweezil Zappa and Lisa Loeb as they travel around the country visiting restaurants and diners. In this episode, they visit Atlanta when the two hang out with one of the Indigo Girls and sing a few tunes. I noticed that D & L will break out their guitars at the drop of a hat. And I bet if they got a crowd to listen, a lot of dollar bills would fall into that hat!
    This show is definitely aimed at young foodies who loved 90's indie pop and can sing along to Dweezil's sister's song, "Valley Girl". (Remember back when kids of rock stars actually attempted to be successful, even if it is kinda lame!). The show was nice, but D& L are way too laid back for TV. Compared to other frenetic Food Network stars like Emeril and Jamie Oliver, Dweezil and Lisa are pretty tame. Plus neither seem dumb enough or funny enough to generate any watercooler buzz. (Do foodies gather around a watercooler or a hot pot of pasta?!) Anyway, I like Lisa Loeb's website and her glasses are just adorable!
    "My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard."     Hey There Lonely Girl
    Everybody needs somebody, sometime, right?! A new book called Quirkyalone by Sasha Cagen challenges that old notion that we all want to be in relationship. She proclaims that many single people are no longer waiting for the perfect match, but they are living their best life alone.
    Well, I went to the website and took the quiz to see if I am a quirkyalone. I was surprised and kinda disappointed to find that I am very quirkyalone. I guess I can console myself with my battery operated friends who come in handy (pun intended) when my other friends are out on dates or moving in with THEIR boyfriends, damnit!
    Friends in Low Places.
    Rumor has it that NBC has finally found a replacement for their obnoxious hit show "Friends". There's a deal in the works with the website, friendster.com. The Friendster show will be a reality show where six friends are connected to 176,482 people. I also hear that Kevin Bacon was considered to star in the new reality show but NBC could not afford his seven-figures which doesn't refer to his salary but to his many connections! :-)
    Hey Ya!
    NEW YORK
    Looking for cheap thrills on Hump Day?! Then take the L train to Bedford and enjoy good food and music. First, I suggest grabbing a bite to eat at Bean, 167 Bedford Ave at N. 8th.
    This cute little spot that is just off Bedford Avenue
    on North 8th Street is just the place to start your night.
    Then for music, head around the corner to Laila Lounge, 113 N 7th St (bet Berry & Wythe). My good friend, Don McCloskey, will entertain you with his cuddly antics and folky funk acoustic sounds. It's last minute but it's free and fun on a Wednesday, January 7!
    One of the best party bands in New York City, The Niagaras will be playing at the Cutting Room this Saturday, January 10. A bit of trivia for you--Chris Noth (AKA Mr. Big) on "Sex on the City" is one of the owners of the Cutting Room. The Cutting Room is located in Flatiron area at 19 West 24th Street between 5th & 6th Avenues.
    Let's Go To Bed
    Today, Katie Brown from A&E's "All Year Round with Katie Brown" appeared on "Regis and Kelly" and demonstrated how to make a bed. The funny thing she said is that she likes something heavy on top of her in bed. I'm pretty sure she was referring to a duvet cover!
